In supernatural thrillers, sometimes a lack of background sound is effectively used, as it creates a sense of discomfort and a feeling of being on edge, as it is unusual in film for their to be no sound at all. No background sound helps to create a build up suspense and allow key dialog to the plot of the story appear my significant if it is said in silence.
In this scene from 'Sixth Sense' there is no sound during the dialog, which draws more attention to what the two characters are saying (a significant part of the story.)
